HANDSOME 13-YEAR-OLD ABOUT TO RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER AN AWESOME SUMMER.

Next Wednesday, Lucas Hanson will return to school as an 8th grader at Aki Kurose. He has had quite an eventful summer with his family and friends.

The week after school got out, Lucas and his family went to the Canadian Rockies in an RV. They saw the beautiful mountains and lakes. Burke braved the frigid waters of Lake Louise and Beaux River. Lucas had a trach change in the slightly snowy mountains and one night, his sister, Ida (pronounced “ee-da”) almost fell off her bed above the drivers’ window. There were many long drives.

Lucas had two online writing camps this summer. One was called Write the World in which Lucas wrote a sci-fi story called “In Dream’s land,” which can be viewed on Lucas’s creative writing website, handsomeboywrites.org. The Write the World camp overlapped with a camp with Seattle Parks and Rec. Everyone there had a disability. This camp was just fun activities at Revena Park. The other writing camp was through a writing program called Hugo House and is where Lucas wrote many riveting pieces such as “My life” and, “The Bat Poet Says.” He also went to 2 camps at the Seattle Playgarden: one with Ida and little kids and one just him and other teenagers. Most of the people there had disabilities too.

Lucas and his family then went on a cruise ship at sunset with a friend who has the same disability as him. They had an awesome playlist with mostly songs that Lucas knew. The next night, the family went to ZooTunes to see a hip-hop band called The Roots in concert.

Then, the family went to Razar State Park with friends and did huge games of Kids Against Maturity Illustrated and Not Parent Approved. Lucas and his family stayed in a cabin that they named The Dumbledore (DD for short) because of the 3 other families that came, two were bringing their dogs and the DD was one of the cabins that wasn’t dog friendly.

August 17 was Lucas’s 13th birthday, and to celebrate, the family, along with a neighbor, went on a nature walk with the Seattle Audobon and used special binoculars that can connect to an iPad so that Lucas and his neighbor could see the things the leaders were showing them. More will be explained in this article published in the Audobon Magazine.

Lucas got a game called Poetry For Neanderthals for his birthday. In the game, you try to get people to guess different words using only one-syllable-word clues. If you use a word with two or more syllables, you get bonked with the NO bonker.

On August 20th, Lucas’s bday party happened in his backyard. He had a record-breaking 21 people over to play Kids Against Maturity Illustrated, read his stories and give him Neanderthal style birthday toasts.

Last weekend, Lucas went to Whidbey Island to “demolish” his grandparents. But, in an unfortunate turn of events, his grandfather won on Saturday. In the words of the intro to a highly personal story written by Lucas Hanson “it dreads me so to even remember this.” Luckily, our hero got his revenge the next day and won the game!

Lucas is excited to return to school and meet new people as an 8th grader next week.
